La Dune du Pilat
This natural monument, constantly changing, seems to be familiar to everyone. And yet, it harbours many secrets that those who merely climb it will never guess. To unravel the mysteries of this strictly protected area, the Grand Site de la Dune du Pilat organises a wide range of activities for all ages, including guided walks during the day and at sunset, workshops and storytelling evenings for adults. Weather permitting, the following are also on offer: fun workshops for children and a viewing point with a telescope on the crest of the dune.
From Arcachon: 15 minutes by car and 30 minutes by bike.
Oyster farms
Oyster farming has shaped the landscape of the Arcachon Basin since the 19th century. This 2 to 3 hour trip takes you sailing amongst the ‘pignots’ (the wooden stakes that mark out the oyster beds) bringing you right up close to the work of the oyster farmers.
You’ll sail past the oyster-farming villages of the Cap Ferret peninsula, such as Le Canon, Piraillan and L’Herbe with its colourful wooden huts, at the leisurely pace of the Bassin. Trips around low tide are best: the oyster beds are then exposed, giving you a better insight into the different stages of oyster farming.
Tasting can take place on board or during a stop at an oyster farmer’s hut, featuring oysters from the Bassin and, depending on your preference, a seafood platter, cold meats and regional cheeses.
